posted 05/20/2010 An incident this week has prompted the board to issue this note regarding the policy of no jewelry during games.
This policy is the policy of the softball governing organization, ASA.
It is also a generally supported policy in most sports. For example, Framingham United Soccer has this same policy.
The policy is also supported by the various insuring entities.
It is simply a safety related policy meant to protect all participants in the game.
Compliance is unconditional.
This is not a judgement call of the umpires, coaches, or any league official.
Failure to comply may affect validity of the players insurance policy from the league.
The policy states that no jewelry may be worn during a game.
The instructions to the umpires are as follows:
The player is to be informed that she must remove her jewelry.
If she does not remove the jewelry, she may not play in that game.
If the player, the players parents and/or the players coach, refuse to remove the jewelry or the player from the game, the umpires are instructed to leave the field and not officiate in the game.
They are also instructed to report the incident to the Chief Umpire who will forward the report to the Disciplinary Committee of the Board of Directors for investigation and action.
Once the umpires leave the field, the game is no longer an official game and the disposition of the game will be determined by the board of directors.
Safety is the highest priority of this league.
