Framingham Youth Softball

If you're new to the sport of Softball, it can be a bit daunting trying to figure out what your child needs. This page is meant to give you a brief overview of the equipment that's required as well as some optional items you may want to consider.

Please note that we have a lot of this equipment available in our shed for players to use or "adopt" for the season. If there is something you are looking for, please reach out to us at [email protected] and we'll be more than happy to try and accommodate.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT

Glove
See below for a video on how to pick the perfect glove. For tips on how to break-in and take care of your glove check this video out

Cleats
Softball (or Soccer) cleats without metal spikes are required for Juniors and Seniors and are optional for kids in the Instructional division.

Softball Pants
For Juniors & Seniors we recommend gray softball pants like these or these. At the instructional level, sweatpants or leggings are acceptable

PASS IT ON PROGRAM - We have some items availalbe to pass on to players. You can view that list here

If you have items you'd like to pass on, please email a description of the item (Brand, Size, Condition etc) as well as a photo or photos of it to [email protected]

OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT

Bat
See video below for tips on buying a bat. The bat should have the "USA Softball Certified" stamp, which most if not all bats sold in a sporting goods store have.

Helmet
Various sized helmet are available in the equipment shed for use. If you would prefer to buy your own, make sure it fits properly. See video below for tips.

Face mask
Face masks are required for pitchers and are strongly recommended for all other fielding positions, particularly at the lower levels as girls are still developing throwing and catching skills. We have face masks available in the equipment shed as well. This mask is good for younger Instructional players and this mask is good for Juniors & Seniors

Softballs
Coaches will have softballs for practices and games, but if you wanted to buy softballs to practice at home the Instructional division plays with 11" "training" or soft balls, Juniors division plays with 11" "fastpitch" hard balls, while the Seniors division plays with 12" "fastpitch" hard balls

Sliding Shorts
Sliding shorts or padded shorts are worn under softball pants to provide extra protection when sliding. This is something that doesn't happen in Instructional and rarely happens in the Juniors division. You can find sliding shorts at a variety of places, here are a few available at Dicks Sporting Goods

Softball Bag
Belt
Socks
Visor/Hat
Batting Gloves
